Personal finance explainer videos on a chalkboard

Finance is the one channel niche where a drawing beats a talking head: a bar that grows on the board while the narrator says the number is easier to follow than a person saying it to a camera. And drawn explainers do not date the way a face and a haircut do.

Doodaro builds the video from your script, one scene per step of the worked example, in a chalkboard or newspaper style. When a chart scene draws the wrong shape, you fix that scene and leave the rest.

How it works

  1. 1

Write the script around one example

Paste a 500 to 650-word script into the Story box: the question, the concept in plain words, one worked example with real numbers, the takeaway. If you have only a topic, ask the story assistant for a 4-minute draft and then check every number yourself.

  2. 2

    Doodaro builds the scenes

Pick Midnight Chalk, white chalk on a near-black board that reads clearly on phones, or Editorial Ink for a newspaper look with red accents. Build scenes gives the concept, each step of the example and the takeaway their own drawn scene with narration.

  3. 3

    Review, then export

Check every scene with a number in it. If a drawn chart shows the wrong direction or the wrong labels, edit the picture description to say exactly what the bars or lines do and click Redraw on that scene only. Give number scenes a longer hold, then render the MP4.

Example: what compound interest does to $200 a month over 30 years

A 590-word script: the question, a two-sentence definition, an example of $200 a month at 7 percent for 10, 20 and 30 years, and the takeaway. Build scenes produced ten scenes. Scene 7 drew three bars of equal height for the three time spans, so the picture description was changed to 'three bars, each much taller than the last, labeled 10, 20 and 30 years' and only that scene was redrawn. The video ran 4 minutes 5 seconds.

Settings used
  • Style: Midnight Chalk
  • Voice: calm, plain-spoken American English narrator
  • Length: 4 minutes
  • Format: 16:9

Best practices

  • Keep one video to one concept and 3 to 5 minutes, which is 450 to 750 words. Budgeting, index funds and credit scores are three videos, not one.
  • Use one worked example with 3 numbers at most, such as 10, 20 and 30 years. Give each number its own scene of 8 to 12 seconds so the chart builds one bar at a time.
  • Round numbers in the narration and put the exact ones in the picture description, so the narrator says 'about 240,000 dollars' while the board shows 243,994.
  • Set a hold time of 4 to 5 seconds on any chart or table scene so the finished board stays up while the narrator explains it.
  • Say what the video is not in the first 20 seconds: 'this is general education, not advice for your situation'. It takes 1 scene and saves you the comment thread.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make personal finance videos without showing my face?

Write a script around one concept and one worked example, paste it into Doodaro, pick a style such as Midnight Chalk and click Build scenes. Each step becomes a drawn scene with a narrator. Check the number scenes, redraw any chart that misleads, and export the MP4.

Can the video show charts and calculations?

Yes, as drawn charts and figures. Describe them in the scene's picture description, for example 'three bars rising left to right, labeled 10, 20 and 30 years, with the numbers written above each bar'. The engine draws it stroke by stroke. If the shape is wrong, redraw that scene.

Which style looks most trustworthy for finance?

Midnight Chalk for a clean chalkboard look that reads on phones; Editorial Ink for a financial-newspaper feel; Minimal Indigo for a fintech look; Story Infographics when the video is mostly data. One style per video.

How long should a finance explainer be?

Three to five minutes for one concept, or under 60 seconds in 9:16 for a single tip. At about 150 words per minute, that is 450 to 750 words for a full explainer and around 140 words for a Short.

How do I update a video when a rate or a rule changes?

Open the project, edit the narration and picture description on the scenes that mention the old figure, and click Revoice and Redraw on those scenes. The other scenes are not touched, and every project pins an engine version so they render the same way as before.

Can I add a disclaimer?

Yes. Write it into the script as its own short scene near the start or the end. The narrator reads it and the board can show it as drawn lettering if you put the words in the picture description. Doodaro does not add burned-in captions, so drawn lettering is how on-screen text appears.
